Why Elope in New Hampshire?

Simple Marriage Laws

Getting married in New Hampshire is simple because of the state's accommodating marriage laws. There’s no residency requirement; couples can receive their marriage license on the same day, and there’s flexibility when choosing an officiant.

Low Crime Rate and Quality of Life

New Hampshire consistently ranks among the safest states in the United States, with a high quality of life attributed to its geography, historical culture, low crime rates, and a strong sense of community. Economically, New Hampshire has a low unemployment rate and a healthy job market, supported by a healthy and diverse economy.

Quaint New England Charm

New England's charm is evident in its historic towns and villages with well-preserved colonial and Victorian architecture. These areas are like stepping back in time with cobblestone streets, white-steepled churches, and centuries-old homes. The sense of community and local traditions are also defining features, with town greens hosting farmers' markets and fairs and coastal villages’ maritime heritage through seafood shacks and fishing boats.

What is New Hampshire Known For?

History and Culture:

New Hampshire dates back to colonial times, known for its role in American independence and textile manufacturing. Its culture values outdoor activities, historic preservation including places like Portsmouth, Concord, and Hanover,, and community traditions like town meetings and fairs.

Live Free or Die Spirit:

Originating from Revolutionary War General John Stark's toast, the state motto, "Live Free or Die," showcases New Hampshire’s independent spirit and commitment to personal freedoms. Residents embrace this philosophy through activism, community engagement, and a strong sense of self-reliance, shaping a state known for its low taxes, minimal regulations, and civic participation.

No Sales Tax or Income Tax:

It is one of the few states in the U.S. with no sales tax or state income tax, which attracts residents and shoppers from neighboring states. With less financial stress, couples can benefit from cost savings that directly impact their budget and allow for more creative wiggle-room.

How to Elope in New Hampshire

Learn about commitment ceremonies!

Obtain a Marriage License:

Marriage licenses can be purchased for $60 at any county clerk's office.  There is no waiting period, and licenses are effective immediately.

Age Requirements:

The minimum age to marry is 16, with judicial approval. Those 18 or older will need to provide an ID to verify their age and identity.

Find an Officiant:

Couples will need someone to conduct the ceremony and sign their marriage license. Several websites, such as Wedding Wire, The Knot, and Thumbtack, can help you find an authorized officiant. Alternatively, you could ask a friend or family member to become ordained and perform the ceremony. The Universal Life Church offers a free and simple online course to help your loved ones participate in your special day.

Consider Permits and Regulations:

If you plan to elope in a national park, state park, Forest Service land, or BLM land, be sure to work with your elopement photographer to check if permits are required for your chosen location and what regulations there might be. Some popular locations may have limited availability or additional fees.

Eloping in New Hampshire is a unique kind of elopement. It includes historical sites, Victorian architecture, and small and intimate towns, all complimented by centuries-old houses and cobblestone roads. If you ever watched Jumanji or Golden Girls growing up, you might remember how cute the towns and neighborhoods were. Although not exclusively in New Hampshire, these popular movies adequately showcase what I mean when I say New Hampshire is quaint and nostalgic, mixed with limited government, no taxes, and iconic seafood; what’s not to love?
